Steve Denny Quintet
Pianist Steve Denny returns to Dazzle with a coterie of Denver’s premiere jazz musicians for a memorable, toe-tapping performance. Reveling in the sounds of influential jazz recordings of the 50’s and 60’s the quintet will engage in the funky, soulful swing of harp bop greats like Horace Silver and Kenny Dorham. Paying homage to the fundamentals of straight-ahead jazz music while bringing a piquant, modern edge, don’t miss the opportunity to see these master’s of swing perform together for one-night only.

Steve Denny is an accomplished pianist, composer and educator living in New York City. He is a teaching artist with the New York PopsEd and on faculty at the Bergen Academy of Music and Art in New Jersey. Steve was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition in both 2012 and 2015. He holds a BA in music from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and an MM in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. While at UNC, he was a Graduate Assistant with the Jazz Studies Department and a member of UNC Jazz Lab Band I, one of the top collegiate big bands in the country. In 2008, UNC’s Lab I was awarded “Outstanding Achievement by a Collegiate Big Band” by Downbeat Magazine. In March of 2012, the Steve Denny Trio celebrated the release of their inaugural recording project, Life in the Basement, out on the Dazzle Recordings label. The album has received airplay on jazz stations across the country; it features an eclectic array of Steven’s original compositions that bridge the gap between the swinging, spirited feel of familiar jazz standards and the emotive harmonies and complex textures of modern music. Steve has performed with many notable jazz artists including Slide Hampton, Stefon Harris, Marco Panascia, and Paul Warburton. Steve is a leader and sideman for multiple musical outfits, performing often at New York venues such as Shapeshifter, Silvana, Pianos, and Club Bonafide. He also maintains an active schedule as an accompanist for local churches, choirs and student recitals throughout the greater Tri-state region.
