Their repertoire includes pieces by composers as varied as Thelonius Monk, Phillip Glass, the Beatles, and the White Stripes, in addition to their exciting original material. The trio places great importance upon engaging their audiences, and their performances are always highly energetic, yet sensitive and dynamic, incorporating group improvisation, extended techniques, and trancey minimal jams. Listeners often report finding a new-found appreciation for the jazz art form after experiencing a Mikey Smith Trio performance.

Mikey Smith Trio
Mikey Smith is a pianist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and educator who is passionate about expressing meaning through music. Born in St. Louis, MO to a musically passionate family, Mikey grew up on rock and roll, soul, and blues. His teen years were troubled, and he credits music as a primary factor in being able to turn his life around and complete his high school education. He went on to study music at the University of Colorado, and earned degrees in piano performance and music production in 2017.

Mikey is currently an active performer and composer in Denver’s improvisational music scene. In addition to his trio, Mikey also leads the experimental keyboard/drum set duo Particle Parade, performs straight-ahead jazz at The Meadowlark in Denver every Monday night (winner of Westword’s “Best Jazz Jam”), and hosts an improvisational art and music session every Wednesday night at Syntax Physic Opera. Mikey also works as a sideman with a number of crowd-drawing local acts, including Dragondeer, Joseph Lamar, and Venus Cruz. Mikey has performed with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and also works as an accompanist, composer, and musical director for a number of modern dance ensembles, and composes music for film, television, and radio. Several of his pieces are in regular rotation on Denver’s internationally syndicated jazz radio station, KUVO.
